The Clan of Il

Found in my archives, a book project that never saw the light of day due to…reasons. The book format was a hybrid suggestion, as at the time, fiction-line novels were not in the pipeline to provide story support. This once-approved (but no longer) project aimed to alleviate that problem.

This is the solicitation that went out to freelancers, much like a “call for proposals.” Writers were assigned based on their estimated workloads and in August of 2013, the book was 95% completed. Then halted. Later, shelved. That was its condition when I departed the company behind the line in late 2016.

As a final note before you begin: I was contracted to produce (and write some parts of) the book but opted out when I resigned my position.

Enjoy what is now a “what if” look at the universe in the 32nd century.

APPROVED SOLICITATION OUTLINE (June 7, 2013) (est. 192 PAGES)

IlClan [TEMP TITLE] builds upon the foundations set up in Field Manual: 3145 and Era Report 3145. The focus of this sourcebook is two-fold and as such, will be a departure from previously established sourcebook formats. The first focus is that of fiction; IlClan will have five short stories—each story roughly tying in to the section after it—expanding on the era’s established characters from FM45 and ER45. The second focus is on each year from 3145 through the first half of 3151, culminating with the conquest of Terra and the establishment of the Third League. Rules at the end of the book will be campaign-focused, including ATOW storyhooks similar to those in ATOW and ATOWC, the Fortress Wall, a new PWS, and several RISC gear.

Currently, the outline of the book is “short” roughly 4-6 pages (dependent on the total number of maps used) and is considered “art-lite.” If additional padding is needed, custom versions of character vehicles/BattleMechs may be solicited to fill out the 192 page count. If this occurs, solicitation of such designs will happen at that time.

Introduction (500): In-universe summary sheet from Janella Lakewood to Tucker Harwell, identifying the purpose of the document as a quick summary of events immediately prior to the momentous formation of the Third League. The report is dated March 3152. A “historian’s caveat” is presented as well, taking into account the continued brokenness of the communications grid. News reports that highlight other occurrences are seeded throughout, providing context from other areas of the Sphere.

Terra, December 3145 – February 3146: Julian Davion and Devlin Stone meet on Terra. Julian lays out the original agreement between the Suns and the Republic, as initially forged by Harrison and Redburn. Recognizing the importance of retaining a major ally such as the Suns for his near-future plans, Stone agrees to honor the alliance and proposes a new strategy. When the Republic drops the Wall to reclaim its territory, Stone will send a major task force into the Suns and liberate it from the Combine’s hold. This will allow Julian to concentrate the remains of his forces against the Confederation without fear of further loss to the Combine. (Any losses between now and Stone’s emergence would be erased when the RAF plows directly towards the Suns capital.) Stone pointedly does NOT mention when the Wall will fall, only that it will be soon and when the Republic is ready.

[Jul] Capellans readjust their forward lines – reducing pressure on the Suns front – as Julian Davion fights his way through the Confederation towards Sian. (The Harrowing of Capella) The CCAF push towards Kathil is slowed as Liao moves to defend against Julian’s actions. [500]
[Jul] Claiming that Tharkad cannot keep them safe from the encroaching FWL, Lyran general Diego Widmer declares himself warlord of Buena and secedes from the Commonwealth. He also lays claim to Valloire and his homeworld of Ayacucho and offers protection to any worlds in the region who want it. His first action is to launch an assault on Loburg and forces the world to capitulate, seizing the valuable arms factories in the process. [500]

[Jan] Acting in their capacity as part of the Clan Protectorate member-state of the FWL, Clan Sea Fox enacts an economic interdiction of Regulus, which soon begins to take a toll on its people. The Regulans fight back, sending a few naval task forces against the enforcing aimags but fail miserably. [500]

[Aug] Julian Davion accepts the crown in a hasty ceremony on June. He vows to bring the fight to the Confederation and assures the AFFS High Command that New Avalon will not remain a Combine holding for long. [700]
[Oct] Marian Hegemony forces hit Gibraltar. Evidence of Magistracy and Capellan support uncovered. [500]
[Nov] By this time reduced to barely a company in strength and with a sizable number of civilians now attached to her command, a desperate Callandre Kell and the Kell Hounds disappear into the Periphery. [500]
[Dec] House Davion launches Operation CERBERUS, a large-scale two-pronged offensive against Confederation forces on worlds around New Syrtis as the first stage in a campaign to reclaim the former march capital. The two fronts of the offensive are commanded by Julian Davion and XXX and are intended to converge on New Syrtis in a year. [500]

New Syrtis, October 3048: In an attempt to inspire confidence among the AFFS command and his people, Julian leads a key assault on New Syrtis. Thanks to a traitor within the AFFS, the Confederation is aware of parts of Julian’s plan and moves 7 regiments to defend the system. In order to achieve victory, Julian authorized the hiring of several mercenary commands, including Wolf’s Dragoons. The CCAF regiments defending the world put up a tremendous fight to the death, laying waste to much of the planet’s population centers and destroying the ancestral Hasek home. The battle drags on for three months; Julian declares victory on 25 December.

[Feb] Major battle on Coventry between Lyran and Jade Falcon forces. Jasek Kelswa-Steiner killed. Lyrans barely hold the planet. The Falcon Galaxy Commander accepts hegira from Roderick Steiner rather than nuke the Lyran forces, as he has been ordered to do by Malvina Hazen. [500]
[Mar] Hurting and in desperation due to the Sea Fox interdiction, a cabal of Regulan generals deploy an old Blakist WMD device on Oriente (and possibly Atreus and Marik, too?). Jessica Marik dies. Nikol Marik, offworld at the time, becomes Captain-General. The Oriente response is immediate, annexing a few Regulan worlds and moving a task force towards Regulus, with the intent of shattering Regulan arms manufacturing. [500]
[Apr] Lester Cameron-Jones, at the urging of his wife, denounces the actions of his generals and tries to broker a cease-fire. Oriente refuses, demanding additional Regulan worlds and other reparations before accepting a full surrender from Regulus. [500]
[Jul] Regulus officially surrenders to the new Free Worlds League. It is treated and governed as an occupied territory, with limited rights and privileges within Parliament. (Regulus agreed to this status for 10 years time before it can petition to join the League as a full member state.) [500]
[Aug] Combine forces assault Remagen in an attempt to destroy Sandoval and PERCEVAL. The attack fails but sparks a new wave of panic among the AFFS rank and file. [500]
[Sep] Xieng Khouang Massacre. Rumors that ComStar can but refuses to fix the local HPG because of anti-Capellan prejudice prompt the ransacking of the capital city’s station. Thirty-eight ComStar people are strung up in the streets and several hundred thousand C-bills of damage is done before order is restored. [500]

[Mar] The RAF, under command of Paladin [XXX], liberates several worlds on the Davion/Combine border as Stone honors his agreement with Julian. The Combine, caught somewhat unprepared, rallies on Exeter, though Warlord [XXX] is killed. The RAF’s initial arc stretches from Dieron to Ozawa. [500]
[May – Dec] Clan Wolf begins a series of escalation raids against the Republic, testing its defenses and forces now that the Wall is down.
[May] Menke, Columbine, and Zanzibar fall to AFFS forces, though they take heavy losses. The AFFS tries to supplement with additional mercenary forces but finds the cost exceptionally high after perceptions of New Syrtis. Planetary militias are stripped of men and material to help stave off the bleeding, but to limited effect. (This will also not endear the populace to Julian.) After taking higher-than-predicted losses, CERBERUS is put on hold and Julian falls back to New Syrtis. [500]
[Jun] Clan Wolf seizes Dubhe from Redburn’s remnants, leaving them with just Callison, Marcus and Castor. The Fidelis WarShip Flatus makes it back to Callison with the surviving Republic forces, but has to be scuttled. [500]
[Jul] Clan Sea Fox finalizes the acquisition of all ComStar assets in the Free Worlds League. ComStar has no resources to fight it and quietly acquiesces. [500]
[Nov] MIIO agents leak details of Liao’s actions on New Syrtis to several surrounding captured worlds, sparking a wave of riots and rebellion. The Capellan answer—armed suppression—only adds fuel to the fire. The Confederation reluctantly pulls off these worlds (maybe 4-5 surrounding New Syrtis), which are of no strategic or industrial value anyway. [500]
[Nov] Robinson is liberated by the RAF as the DCMS quickly abandons the march capital. A few RAF regiments remain on the world, awaiting AFFS reinforcements. The remainder quickly depart for parts unknown. [500]

During the Wolves’ celebration, Devlin Stone challenges Alaric for the right to be the Exarch, and wins in a battle of wits that places him as the “Cameron” to Alaric’s “Kerensky.” Alaric declares himself ilKhan by right of conquest.

[Feb] Daoshen Liao sends a diplomatic team to meet with the Combine and offers a strategic alliance to coordinate a two-pronged assault on the Suns and the Republic. [500]
[Mar] Clan Wolf invades Skye. With the Falcons already committed in the Donegal-Coventry-Tharkad area, the Skye assault throws off Malvina’s rhythm. As Skye falls, the Wolves hit and seize half of the Remnant. [500]
[Mar] Daoshen voids Danai’s cease-fire agreement and launches a renewed assault into the Federated Suns, aiming once again towards Kathil. The assault is less about taking worlds and more about destroying all AFFS resistance, in order to pave a path towards June. [500]
[Apr] Clan Wolf turns its border forces on Paladin [XXX]’s conquests, retaking all four worlds over the next two months. Paladin [XXX] is killed. [500]
[Oct] The CCAF’s Wave two of BÀOYÌNG launches. [worlds TBD] [500]
[Nov] The Falcons hit Thorin and New Earth at the end of the month and find themselves facing an unlikely (and uneasy) alliance of Wolves and Republic forces. The Falcons are defeated, with many of the more pragmatic Falcon commanders willingly submitting themselves to Alaric’s Wolves. Malvina faces the same situation in December when she arrives at Rigel Kentarus. Here, she defeats the combined alliance-of-convenience. [500]

Tukayyid, April 3151 Though the Wolves and Falcons support Alaric’s claim to the ilKhanship, the rest of the Council of Six Clans objects, citing Alaric’s parentage and questionable Bloodname. But Alaric has a trump card. Digging around in the Jihad-era archives on Terra, Stone and his people have uncovered evidence of a great scam. During the war, documents purporting to show that the Word of Blake derived from descendants of Clan Wolverine who had found shelter within ComStar centuries earlier were instrumental in getting the Ghost Bears (and eventually the other Clans) deeply involved in the fight against the Word… and it was all a lie. The documents were fabricated by Chandrasekhar Kurita, who was able to use his contacts in Interstellar Expeditions to give them an air of authenticity. (This is information that the Sharks eventually ferret out as their Watch infiltrated ComStar over the last several decades.) But that’s not the part that Alaric is concerned about. Stone’s evidence proves that the Council of Six Clans has known all about the falsity of the Word/Wolverine connection since shortly after the end of the war and covered it up lest they be embarrassed at having been manipulated by a bunch of Spheroids. Using this as leverage, Alaric pressures the Council into accepting him as ilKhan.

13 YEAR OF THE DAWN (12,500 WORDS) ??? 19 PP

Period Review (8,000): Overview of the events of the first half of 3151.

[Feb] Malvina is dead; transcript of the saKhan’s report to the Falcon Clan Council, including announcing Malvina’s death, condemnation of her actions, the vote for a new khan and sakhan, and the acceptance of Clan Wolf as ilClan. [500]
[Feb] Alaric and Stone hammer out a temporary agreement of control and process. The ilKhan then takes Alpha Galaxy and the Falcon’s leadership, and heads to Tukkayid to confront the Council of Six. [500]
[Mar] The new RAF/Wolf (hereafter “League”) forces reassemble and slam into a handful of BÀOYÌNG worlds, handily ejecting the defending CCAF. BÀOYÌNG comes to a halt as Daoshen hears of and considers this new alliance of power. [500]
[May] What does it all mean? A private entry by Stone to Tucker, who begins sketching out his ideas for the foundations of the League’s future – and where it may go from here. This is the preamble to the Ministry Class Act that sets up House Harwell. [500] – BEN R.
